I am new to Magic: The Gathering. How would you recommend building a deck?

I just bought my Scars of Mirrodin set the other day as well as 2 M11 and 1 Zendikar booster packs. I want to use a black/blue deck, but I keep getting creamed by my boyfriend and his friends! I'm about to start using black/blue/green because I have some pretty awesome green cards. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to build a deck with great defense (especially counters) and quick and painless offense?

Well...
First of all, you don't want to mix scars of mirrodin with zendikar. Zendikar is about traps, allys, landfall, etc. while scars is all about artifacts. Try to trade off you excess m11/zendikar stuff for artifact things.
Next, cut your deck down to 60 cards. That is a must. If you don't you have a lesser chance of drawing your good stuff, and lesser chance of winning.
Then, take your deck apart, and examine it. Figure out what each card in your deck does and whether that's better than the alternate options you have. For example, Doom blade will usually trump grasp of darkness, since it cost less specific mana and kills most creatures outright, but can it be compared with Summoner's bane? One you can use at any time, but the other one you have to use on a creature while it's being cast. On the other hand, it also kills black creatures on the stack and gets you an illusion.
Now, find a good manabase. You don't want to run too many colors without ways of getting all your mana reliably (ex. running too many grasp of darknesses and aether adepts and furnace celebrations in the same deck with all basic lands). If you have a clunky manabase with no way to smooth it, cut down the colors.
Finally, this is hard to choke down. Magic is all about money. Even an experienced "Budget" player like me can get crushed repeatedly by people who choose to spend 600 dollars on cards and barely know how to play. In the end, if you keep losing, it may just be because you have an inferior cards compared to everyone else and it's time to upgrade. What I suggest is not buy anything of the sort you already have (unless you really did get a full set of every card in Scars of mirrodin) because intro packs, which is probably what you bought, and booster packs are the most cost-inefficient way to buy cards. The best one is promotional sets, like the Duel Decks, archenemy, premium deck series, and Planechase. The best are the elspeth vs tezzeret duel decks, since they're two brilliant decks for 20 bucks and come with two planeswalkers. You boyfriend would be jealous.

And for you original question, I'm sorry but there isn't a cheap option. The best option available is the Fae, which involves a turn two bitterblossom and then you win the game. Spellstutter everything they play, mistbind clique their upkeep every now and then, cryptic command their team and attack for the win. Yeah, that's pretty much it. And believe me, my friends and I, when we were just small-timer magic players and not tournament crushers, tried to make a budget counter-aggro deck over and over. And we failed. Mainly because I ran akroma, angel of furies and spellbreaker behemoths...
