Back-country skiing what ski is best?
Im interested in backcountry skiing and im not sure which type of ski is best. Alpine touring skis or backcountry specific skis (the free heel kind where you have to telemark but there not telemark skis) and one more thing, could i put Alpine Touring bindings on my regular downhill skis and use them for backcountry skiing with skins?
I have no clue what you mean by "(the free heel kind where you have to telemark but there not telemark skis)", either you are either telemarking or you not. I'm not trying to sound like an @$$, I just don't know what you are getting at.
All Alpine Touring bindings have a free heel that unlocks when going up hill. It locks when going downhill. Going up is not "telemarking", it's touring or skinning. Telemarking is what you do when you go downhill, using the telemark turn while skiing on planks with telemark bindings.
AT bindings come in a wide range of styles ranging from heavy stuff like the ones Marker makes to the lightweight touring bindings made by Dynafit.
If all you plan to do is ride a lift, snowcat, or helicopter to the peak, then you can use good old fixed heel bindings.
As for the skis themselves...well, you can just about mount any binding on any ski. If you plan to hoof yourself up the hill on skins, then get a ski that is light and wide enough to give you the loft you need in the conditions you normally find yourself skiing in. (Fatties in big powder country, mid-fats if you tend to ski in wetter snow.) Again, if you're not getting to the top under your own power, then you can ride whatever you like. Weight doesn't matter.
One ski company's "Alpine Touring" skis are another company's "Backcountry" skis. Companies like Black Diamond and G3 design the bulk of their styles for backcountry use as they tend to be lighter, but you can mount AT, Telemark, or Fixed-Heel bindings on any of them. On the other hand some companies have simply decided to call a few styles with certain dimensions "backcountry" because they are just impractical to use on piste. Case-in-point...K2's Pontoons. K2 classifies them as "backcountry" skis and (use the drop down and click "sidecountry") and "sidecountry" as well. K2 further categorizes skis as "skin compatible." The Hellbent and the Obsethed are skin compatible, but not listed as backcountry...so go figure.
