1998 BMW 523 E39 TOURING - Tailgate Boot won't open?
Can anyone please help, my 1998 bmw 523 e39 hatchback touring boot tailgate will not open.
The electric mechanism makes a noise and then boot slightly lifts and returns but does not unlock when keyfob is pressed.
It can be manually opened from the inside by climbing into the boot removing the inner trim and manually opening.
But when attempting to open with the keyfob it just makes a noise from the boot section as though the mechanism is in operation but does not open.
Also the button beneath the drivers console seems to be firm and does not open the tailgate and the rear tailgate button also doesnt open it.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
Since you can open it mechanically from the inside then I can assume that the rear window lock is OK. But the lock actuator is bad and needs to be replaced. With a new actuator if the window still does not open when pressing the button then the microswitch is also bad.
If everything works at the back but not from the interior switch, suspect an open circuit wire where the window attaches to the roof of the car.
