Great Ski Resorts in the French Alps   by John McElborough

The French Alps, with their many snow- capped peaks, are one of the most magnificent sights in the world. Thousands of tourists from all parts of the world visit the area to go skiing along its slopes, and the locals have responded by establishing resorts for these skiers to stay. This article will discuss some of them.

Meribel (spelled Méribel in French) is home to one of the oldest ski resorts in the Alps, established by a British army officer in 1938; the resort is part of the Three Valleys Ski Area, which also includes La Tania, Courcheval, St. Martin de Belleville, Val Thorens, and Les Menuires: Visitors to Méribel can access any of these places via the 61 ski lifts, which are capable of lifting up to 75,465 skiers at a time. And there are the resort's high-speed gondola lifts, of which there are more here than in any other spot of its kind anywhere in the world. Expert skiers have access to an almost unlimited number of downhill skiing opportunities; among the most spectacular are the Women's Olympic Downhill and, above Méribel-Mottaret, the Mt. Vallon face. Méribel-Mottaret also has a special area for beginning skiers, who can enjoy Rond Point des Pistes or the Altiport. Snowboarding is also available at the many parks run by the resort.

Moving on to the rest of Three Valleys, we come to La Tania, built in 1992 for journalists who had come to cover the Winter Olympics that were being held in Albertville that year. Now the resort is especially popular among English package holiday operators. There are 523 snow cannons used to make artificial snow! And the tree line just above 7500 feet here. At the Ski Lodge Bar, one can enjoy a quiet evening after a day of vigorous skiing activity.

Courcheval has been called the most exclusive resort of any kind in all of France: The most dedicated skiers, including members of the Spanish and Danish royal families, have chosen this place to spend their vacations. Again they use snow cannons to add to the natural snow cover. Courcheval has more skiing instructors than most other ski resorts.

St. Martin de Belleville has the appearance of a pre- twentieth- century European village, with its slate- roofed wooden houses and narrow cobblestone streets. A visitor should not pass up the opportunity to taste the local cheeses, such as Sérac de Chèvre. The French Ski School is located here.
