What is the major difference race boots offer?
Considering the differences between race ski boots and recreational boots, which factor makes the most difference to a racer's performance? Is it "tightness" - the accurate transmission of movement, is it "stiffness" - the flex, or is it forward lean? Which is the most important of these?
Recreational boots are more comfortable for a longer time period than the highest performance race boots. A racer will have their boots tight for the time of the race about 3 minutes maximum and then release the buckles. Recreational skiers may be in theirs for 4-8 hours and only adjust them a couple of times. Of the factors you mention, they need to balance out for each racer. The most important things are fit properly and then the support given to the skier for the type of skiing they are doing. Too much forward lean will give the racer a "closed" ankle which hinders ankle flex. This will hamper a slalom racer but may aid a downhill racer. Either way, the boot must be blended to the skill and leg and body stance of each skier. It is a case of making each boot work with each individual skier. High level professional skiers may spend 8 hours a day 5 or more days a week in their boots and need support and comfort and precise control of the ski. It may take 40 hours of shop work to make the shell fit right or maybe just a an hour or so, the results are well worth the custom fitting for a pro. In all none of the factors you mention is always the most important to racer 1 when compared to racer 2. It depends on the individual. The boots must work for you not for your friend unless he is using them.
