Posca Pens can provide you with the means to create artwork on a range of surfaces. by Mark Glendale
Posca Pens are a water-based pigment marker that is both water proof and light fast - writing on pretty much any surface available to the artist. They are available in a wide range of vibrant colours and different nib sizes to suit the needs of the illustrator. Posca markers can be used for a variety of projects and hobbies including illustrations and posters, glass work, plastic or even fabric. They can write on both light and dark surfaces due to the opacity of their ink and the range of vivid colours available. Posca markers can even over write mistakes as they can be used to write over each other, again down to their opacity and water proof nature when dry.
Posca markers are available in various colours including some glitter and metallics. The basic colours available are: white, ivory, black, grey, slate grey, beige, yellow, bright yellow, straw yellow, light orange, orange, red, red wine, pink, light pink, lilac, violet, brown, sky blue, blue, light blue, emerald green, green, apple green, and light green. The metallic colours available are red, blue, green, pink, silver, gold, bronze and violet. Posca also offer a vibrant fluorescents range in the following colours: yellow, light orange, orange, red, pink, turquoise and green.
The nib widths available range from 0.7mm to 1.5mm depending on the project, they offer the following range of pens:
Posca Brush (1 to 10mm) - gives a brush like stroke and is perfect for intricate illustrations, as once dry the ink can be overlaid with another colour - as with all posca markers. They are also great for reaching places that a regular tip could not.
Posca Fluorescent (1 to 15mm)- these are often used to make a statement. The vibrant colour really stands out and can be used for example with points of sale, for car dealerships on car windows as the ink can be removed after use. They can also be used for big expression within art and illustration.
Posca Extra Broad Chisel (15mm) - these extra broad tips are a favourite of artists creating large scale works. They are also very useful for creating bright illustrations and large scales notice posters.
Posca Broad Chisel (8mm) - this size nib is great for creating both illustrations on fabric or for sign writing.
Posca Medium Bullet (2.5mm) - the medium nib could be of great use to scrap bookers, like all posca pens the ink does not bleed though paper as with alcohol based markers.
Posca Fine Bullet (1.5mm) - perfect for the creation of more intricate illustrations or artwork, the tip is just wide enough to give a great bright effect but not so thick that it will intrude on the elegance of a piece.
Posca Extra Fine Bullet (0.7 to 1mm) - this nib size is perfect for working on a small surface. They are great for colouring with accuracy or making rough sketches.
Posca pen is a unique marker that has an ingenious working system. It incorporates 3 main features that all come together to make this unique pen work. The first part to mention is the ball system this is used within the pen itself. A small ball is placed in every posca marker within the ink cell to keep the ink from congealing and to preserve its consistency. On shaking the pen the ball will run inside the barrel keeping the ink moving and stop it from sitting or going solid. The second component is the action of the nib. The nib of a normal pen may after time become dry and clogged, meaning ink cannot flow down through the nib and onto paper. The design of a posca marker enables the user to only make ink flow when it is needed - by pressing the nib down on your working surface it enables a spring loaded mechanism inside to release the ink needed. Meaning that ink is only released when in use and preventing clogging of the nib. The final part of the posca mechanism is that most of the markers have a removable, replaceable and often washable tip. The tip can be removed and washed allowing for replacement, they can also be taken out and reversed when the nib is worn meaning a double length of work life.
